Life in KAUST/Jeddah

We are looking forward to welcoming you at COHMAS laboratory (Composite and Heterogeneous Materials Analysis and Simulation), part of the Physical Science and Engineering Division at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).

KAUST is located about 70 km north of King Abdulaziz International airport, which is located in the city of Jeddah. Travel by car to KAUST takes about one hour if arriving at the north terminal and one hour and a half from the south terminal.

Weather:

The weather in Jeddah during the month of May and June ranges from 25 to 36 °C. Light clothing is recommended in addition to sun protection for those who are sensitive to the sun.

Shopping/Meals:

KAUST guests reside at the Inn which is located near the bank and is separated from the academic buildings by the main commercial center, "The Square", where restaurants, a pharmacy, and a supermarket are found. The local currency is the Saudi Riyal (SAR) which has a fixed exchange rate of 3.75 SAR/USD.  Credit or debit cards may be used to withdraw local currency from any of the ATM machines located on campus.

Dinner vouchers will be provided. These can be used at the main dining hall which is located at the center of the academic spine.

Wi-Fi:

Free Wi-Fi coverage is available throughout the campus. The "KAUST-Guest" connection may be accessed automatically.

Recreation:

A recreation center with a gym and swimming pool is located walking distance from the Inn. This facility is open from 6 AM to 10 PM and may be accessed by presenting the temporary ID at the front desk along with your room pass at the KAUST Inn.  Facilities are available for men and women.
